Manual Therapy
Hands-on treatment to release restrictions in muscle, joint and connective tissue. Our therapists have achieved high levels of post-graduate training in manual therapy and use a wide variety of approaches specific to each condition.
Acupuncture & Dry Needling
Julie Parenteau and Bobby Anderson are Certified by the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (CAFCI) and use acupuncture as an adjunct to physiotherapy treatments. Acupuncture is utilized to promote healing, relieve pain, and support the body’s capacity for recovery. Dry needling techniques are also provided and are utilized to target specific areas of tightness termed “trigger points”. This type of deep release of myofascial tissue restores mobility to areas of chronic restriction.
Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)
Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is a dry needling technique. Acupuncture needles are placed into tight muscular bands to elicit a muscle twitch response, which in turn decreases the resting tone or tightness of the muscle. By using IMS to target the source of the pain at the spinal level and the symptoms of the pain at the peripheral muscle, it works by addressing both the cause and effects of various ailments. IMS is appropriate for various acute and chronic pain conditions, from tennis elbows to long standing myofascial pain. Specific Exercise Prescription
(including Core Stability Training)
Our therapists continue to take extensive courses on the latest approaches to exercise therapy. They have exceptional levels of training in targeting those ‘hard to find’ muscle groups that are the key to recovery and prevention of re-injury. Jeff Orchard obtained his first degree in Human Kinetics with an Exercise Science specialization, and has worked as a personal trainer prior to becoming a physiotherapist.
Assessment of Vestibular Dysfunction
(vertigo)
Specialty assessments of vertigo-disorders will be available to treat specific disorders of the vestibular system. Vestibular Rehabilitation utilizes a specialized assessment procedure to identify the causes of a patient’s dizziness or vertigo. Exercise and manual therapy are then used to address the symptoms associated with vestibular system pathology. Common pathologies include Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), vestibular labyrinthitis or neuronitis, trauma to the vestibular apparatus, and age related degenerative changes
Capnography
(breathing biofeedback training)
Poor breathing behaviour is a common reaction to stress and can result in hypocapnia (reduced levels of carbon dioxide). The effect of these changes is to reduce blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues resulting in a variety of symptoms often attributed to stress. Capnography allows us to view and monitor the breath by tracking carbon dioxide levels. It can then be used as biofeedback to train good breathing behaviours. The effect on symptoms is dramatic; it is a powerful stress management tool that also assists with performance in athletic, academic and work-related environments.
Pre-Natal & Post-Partum Health
Exercise prescription and supportive health during pregnancy is essential. We provide education in caring for your body leading up to delivery, as well as recovering your core post-partum.
Pre-Sport Athletic Screening
Determining areas of weakness, tightness or imbalance prior to activity can prevent possible injuries. We are able to screen for specific muscle imbalances that could contribute to a sport-related injury, and address them before they become an issue.
Hand Therapy
Lakeshore Physiotherapy offers assessment and treatment of injuries and conditions of the hand and wrist. This includes a custom hand splinting service. These splints are very useful for many conditions affecting the fingers, wrist, and forearm. They are generally employed to rest overused or traumatized anatomical structures. An alternate application is to improve joint motion following flexion contractures in the finger/thumb joints. A major benefit of a custom splint versus over-the-counter, is a guaranteed excellent fit.
Other Areas of Practice
TMJ dysfunction, gait assessments, golf injury prevention, and biomechanical and postural analysis.
